In 1883, a small forest department was established in
the Straits Settlements. Subsequently, a forest officer was appointed
in Perak (1895), followed by Selangor (1898) and Negeri Sembilan
(1900). A Conservator of Forest in India, A.M Burn-Murdoch was
appointed the Chief Forest Officer for the Straits Settlements and
Federated Malay States on 16 October 1901. This triggered the
establishment of full-fledged departments in the states, recruitment
of trained and supporting staff, and formulation and enforcement of
laws. The management of the rainforest went into full swing.
This centenary celebration revisits the past,
highlights the issues and challenges in managing the rainforest and
seeks to raise public awareness on the role and contributions of the
department to the nation.
