His Majesty, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Almarhum
Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail was installed as the sixth Ruler of
Perlis on April 17, 2000. His Majesty was born in Arau, Perlis on
the 12 Jamadil Awal 1362 of the Muslim calendar of May 17, 1943.
His Majesty received his early education at the Arau
Malay School. He then continued his English primary education at the
Wellesley Primary School and then at the Westland Primary School
until 1955. His Majesty continued his secondary education at the
Penang Free School before proceeding to England where he completed
his formal education in 1963 at the Wellingborough Public School.
His Majesty was installed as the Crown Prince of
Perlis on October 30, 1960, while he was still schooling. His
Majesty underwent the officer cadet course at the Royal Military
Academy, Sandhurst, England from January 1964 until December 1965.
Upon completing his training in Sandhurst, His
Majesty returned home and joined the Malaysian Defense Ministry. He
served as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of the Malaysian
Reconnaissance Corps from December 12, 1965. His Majesty also served
in Sabah in 1966 and in Sarawak in 1967 and he was transferred to
Pahang until his resignation on December 31, 1969 to concentrate on
affairs of the state of Perlis.
On February 15, 1967, he married Her Majesty Raja
Permaisuri Agong Tengku Fauziah binti Tengku Abdul Rashid, A.M.N.,
D.K., S.S.P.J, S.P.M.P., who carried the title Raja Puan Muda Perlis
and they were blessed with a son Syed Faizuddin Putra and a daughter
Sharifah Fariza. His Majesty was installed for the first time as the
Regent when His Royal Highness the Raja of Perlis and Her Royal
Highness Raja Perempuan of Perlis left for America and Europe from
June 23, 1967 until October 24, 1967.
In 1970, His Majesty served the army again after
being appointed as Captain of the Local Territorial Army where he
served from November 16, 1970 until October 1, 1972. His Majesty
also served as the Commanding Officer of Regiment 504, an Army
Reserved Unit with the rank of Colonel. His Majesty was appointed
Colonel-In-Chief of the Malaysian Ranges on September 19, 2000.
His Majesty also actively involved in sports
especially golf, tennis and football. In May 1971, His Majesty was
elected President of the Putra Golf Club, a post he held until 16
April 2000. His Majesty is also the patron of the Perlis Referees
Association since 1967 and held the post of the Yang DiPertua,
Perlis Football Association for 18 years.
His Majesty is dedicated towards his people and
takes great interest and care especially in the field of education.
In 1986, His Majesty was elected the Chairman of the Tuanku Syed
Putra Foundation, an organization formed to assist students in
Perlis to further their studies in institution of higher learning,
both locally and abroad. This in return would help uplift the living
standard in the state.
His Majesty is keen on religious matters and is
directly involved in the religious affairs of the state where he
heads the Perlis religious Islamic Council. his Majesty ensures that
the religious understanding is based on the Fahaman Sunnah Wal
Jamaah. His Majesty is the Chancellor of University Sains Malaysia (USM).
On December 12, 2001, the 191st (special) Conference
of Rulers in Malaysia elected His Majesty as the twelfth Yang
di-Pertuan Agong for a term of five years from December 13, 2001
until December 12, 2006. The appointment and the taking of the oath
and the signing of the Instrument of Office was held at the
Balairong Seri, Istana Negara Kuala Lumpur on Thursday December 13,
2001. The glittering ceremony was witnessed by the Malay Rulers, YAB
Prime Minister along with the Cabinet Ministers and special invited
guests. His Majesty was installed the Supreme Head of nation of
Thursday April 25, 2002 with the title of Seri Paduka baginda Yang
di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin.
